To understand the job of a nurse technician, it is important to understand the role and importance of “technicians”. A technician, in any field, is a person who is specialized in the nuances and daily working in that particular field, researching and updating with the current trends and practices regularly. Nursing, by and large, is the largest provider of services in the healthcare industry. Prominently female
oriented, new vistas are being opened to male nurses too.
Nursing technicians normally report to the NSA Manager or operations Director. Their work involves collaborating with RNs, LPNs, CNAs, patients and their families, specialist doctors as well as general physicians, and other departments and health care entities on the organization as a whole.
Nursing technician specialization comes in two disciplines RGN and RMN. Registered General Nurses or RGN do not have specific areas of expertise except for medical discipline.
The core of a nursing tech’s job is to provide nursing care like regular check up, statistical and conditional monitoring of the patient, administer prescribed medications from time to time and report changes or improvement to the concerned doctor. For this reason, nurses should be well versed in the terminologies and implementation required in their specialized field. As nursing is a 24 hour job, most of them work in groups or batches and take turns through shifts. Hence it is very important that they plan and implement nursing care policies as a collective effort. They need to critically evaluate ongoing clinical practices and implement necessary changes regularly.
In general, a nurse tech would need to take the medical history of the patient, record findings and observations during the tenure of the patient’s stay, prepare the patient for procedures as advised by the attending doctor or specialist, get the blood and urine of the patient tested as per the doctor’s order and complete the paperwork and record keeping of the patient for further reference and check-up. If the nursing tech is involved in ICU care or care of bed-ridden and chronic patients, they also need to do regular massage apart from supervising or doing the physical cleaning of the patient. At all times, the nurse tech is responsible for cleanliness being maintained around the patient.
A nurse tech can be employed at homes to take care of chronic patients, the elderly and bed-ridden individuals. Nurse techs can also be employed in community health care centers, private clinics, and hospitals where they can work in in-patient, out-patient or Intensive Care units. Registered Mental Nurses or RMN specialize in the care of psychiatric or mentally challenged patients and work in mental asylums or hospitals specializing in neuropathy.
